Honey

Our Story

The founder of this organization is from an agricultural family who has been working in the technological domain for the past two decades. He has kept in touch with his village and his family’s agricultural business. Recent trends in his village have dismayed him including loss of the lives of close family friends involved in agriculture. Some of the reasons he has uncovered are losses due to agriculture, health issues of agriculturists and rural versus urbanization economic challenges. Since it has been a big loss to him, he started research in this space to uncover reasons for this social change.

Analysis 1: Indian Agriculture

In the year 1950-51, our agricultural contribution to GDP was 51.8 % whereas in 2014 -2015 it decreased to 17.32%. This 34.49% decline in agricultural contribution mirrors the revenue loss for the sector.

The many reasons for the downfall of agricultural sectors are unorganized growth of real estate, un planned industrial development, drought, non-scientific agricultural method, water mismanagement, soil mismanagement etc… But on deeper analysis, we found a real major issue which was unnoticed.

There are two types of insects on earth – agriculture friendly insects and agriculture non-friendly insects. Most farmers have been using toxic pesticides to eradicate agriculture non-friendly insects resulting in all insects vanishing from fertile soil including agriculture friendly insects and microorganisms. This has resulted in a dip in agricultural production. These toxic chemicals also killed farm pollinators like Honey bees. Honeybees contribute in a major way to the increase of agricultural production. In current scenario, Honey bee has become endangered due to the above reason.

Analysis 2: Health Issues

The life expectancy of an Indian in the year 1960 was 41.17 years and in 2015 it is 68.33 years. This growth rate in life expectancy is due to the developments in the field of science and technology.

Another interesting point to note is that though the life expectancy was 41.17 years in 1960, 95% of people were healthy whereas in 2015, only 65% of people were healthy; around 30% of people were sick in one way or the other. Reasons for this may be a combination of life style issues, consumption of non-organic food and staying away from traditional food.

During research we found that earlier honey used to be part of our food habit which is no longer true. As per Ayurveda and Siddha, Honey cures 2700 diseases and is noted for its anti-cancerous properties, anti-diabetic, provides antioxidants, supports blood formation, helps in healing wounds, treatment of diarrhea, treatment of ulcers, treatment of sore throat, protects teeth, good for skin etc.

Analysis 3: Urbanization

India is witnessing rapid urbanization. According to the Census 2011, about 377 million Indians comprising 31.14% of the country’s population live in urban areas.

The urban population is projected to grow to about 600 million (40%) by 2031 and 850 million (50%) by 2051. Rapid urbanization brings challenges, including meeting accelerated demand for basic services, infrastructure, jobs, land and affordable housing, particularly for the urban poor.

But the main challenge is for migrant farmers who move to the city to supplement their meager earnings in their villages, these farmers are unable to find supplemental income in their villages and hence move to the cities.

Solution

To address the above three issues, the founder has joined hands with another friend and gathered a team of Bee Keepers, farmers, food tasters and lover of life with big dreams about changing the world.

  1. Firstly, they have started connecting with farmers across India and started giving training on bee keeping. Many farmers have started Beekeeping in their farms and have found 40% – 55% increase in agricultural production.

  2. Secondly, daily consumption of quality honey becomes a habit of many famers and their family and now they are staying healthy. Many farmers have started organic farming in their field inspired by this credo of living more in tune with nature.

  3. Thirdly, the honey sales have become a secondary income for the farmers with one hour of effort per week.

We spend majority of our profit for the development of farmers like training, awareness, research.
